Design of An Energy Efficient Outer Rotor Ceiling Fan Single Phase Induction Motor

The ceiling fan motors have been most outlooked motors from an efficiency point of view. However, with an increasing number of such motors in residential and commercial sectors, the need for efficient ceiling fans has arisen. The design of the outer rotor single-phase induction motor (SP-IM) for ceiling fan, is a nonlinear problem involving several design variables. In this work, time-stepping 2D FEA (Two Dimension-Finite Element Analysis) is used to design an energy-efficient ceiling fan SP-IM consuming below 35 W in accordance with BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) star ratings and IS374 standard. A new design is presented and compared for better performance and air delivery with commercial blades. Various performance indices of the new design are presented, including the overall losses and their distribution, airgap flux density plot, and its harmonic spectrum.
