SiC Based Interleaved VSI Fed Transverse Flux Machine Drive for High Efficiency, Low EMI Noise and High Power Density Applications

This paper analyzes the impact of interleaved PWM techniques on transverse flux machine (TFM) drive to achieve high volumetric and gravimetric power density along with high efficiency and low common-mode noise. Interleaving helps the dominant dc-link current ripple content shifts to twice the switching frequency, and a reduced amount of dc-link capacitance becomes more effective to suppress the dc-link current ripple. In addition, this paper shows how interleaving helps to reduce the RMS current requirement of the capacitors. In both ways, the required number of the dc-link capacitor can be reduced, and higher volumetric density can be achieved without sacrificing the machine performance. Moreover, the interleaving effect on efficiency and electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise are analyzed and compared for different switching frequencies. Furthermore, interleaving can be utilized to achieve higher efficiency. The double-stator and single-rotor TFM structure is selected as a candidate machine topology for the intended application. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) is used to analyze and calculate the machine parameters to implement the dynamic simulation in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The circuit simulations are conducted to implement the proposed drive topology and the control algorithm to predict the performance of the proposed drive operation.
