Pedagogical Approach for Developing PWM Based Multi Pulse STATCOM for Dynamic Compensation

This paper is planned to provide a pedagogical approach for developing PWM based multi-phase STATCOM which is required as dynamic compensator in renewable based distributed power system. The paper will provide a systematic approach for young power engineers to simulate multi-pulse STATCOM in MATLAB with full detail for their parameters estimation. The concept of developing STATCOM with more number of pulse is also illustrated in the paper. However, the results are evaluated, compared and demonstrated for six and twelve pulse STATCOM here. The knowledge of getting STATCOM Simulink model can be applied by the researchers further in advanced studies related with applications of power electronics to power system studies. The paper is presenting technical and logical procedure to develop STATCOM model in place of going in theoretical concepts of STATCOM as most of the available work do. The main contribution of this paper are; (i) to explain the specific role based STATCOM configuration, (ii) to develop a systematic approach for STATCOM internal structures, (iii) to explain the cascaded STATCOM model for multi-phase configuration, and (iii) to define the challenges depending on the phase level of STATCOM.
