Delay-Optimized Traffic Forwarding Mechanism in Software Defined Networking

In order to satisfy the Quality of Service requirements of flows in Software Defined Networking (SDN), the queue service rate within devices is required to be controlled, which is not allowed by the standard SDN communication protocol, Openflow. In this paper, we propose a solution to modify the SDN controller without any modification in the Openflow standard or OpenFlow devices. The proposed solution collects real time statistics from the devices. Next, the SDN controller will re-route traffic according to the congestion status of queues inside the devices. Traffic re-routing will ensure load balancing which helps to meet the deadline requirement of delay-sensitive traffic and minimize packet loss rates of delay tolerant flows. The simulation results of the proposed solution show a higher percentage of deadline match and lower packet loss rate of the traffic flows.
