The Definition of the Demand Response Interface for Next-Generation Smart Meters

The demand response potential of the loads connected to smart meters is not yet fully utilized. In Finland the Finnish Smart Grid working Group suggested that distribution system operator (DSO) should provide a technical platform and using the demand response platform interface flexibility service providers (FSP) would able to control the load of the consumer with the consumer consent. To meet the flexibility needs of FSP direct control and calendar based control use cases are developed for the interface with supporting reporting use cases. If a fast and easy implementation is desired, existing message exchange operator model in Finland should be used and incorporate more detailed information about the controllable load into the Datahub. The technical capability with technology foreseen today would enable 1 to 3 minutes response time. There is not yet a decision to implement the interface and many of the business processes around demand response are unclear.
