Broken Rotor Bar Fault Simulation And Analysis In D-q Reference Frame

This paper presents the mathematical model and MATLAB simulation of broken rotor fault in D-q reference frame. In this study, a balanced induction motor is modelled in D-q reference frame and thereafter the model is modified by varying the rotor resistance to achieve the broken rotor bar fault. The broken rotor bar fault is incepted at a point where the induction motor has reached its steady-state to allow proper interpretation of machine behaviour under fault conditions. When comparing the effect of fault at varied load conditions, it is observed that there are more oscillations or dips on the torque when the motor is loaded above 50%. The broken rotor bar fault also created an imbalance in the speed and magnetic flux curve. The fault simulations and analysis presented in this paper depicts detectable patterns on rotor quantities for different fault conditions. These patterns can be used for fault detection in the future.
