Access to Efficient and Sustainable Energy: Case of Madagascar

This study aims to assess the techno-economic feasibility of a renewable power system to provide universal electricity access to the population of Madagascar using the country's renewable resources. The study also evaluates the cost of providing cleaner cooking to households using biogas stoves. To conduct the assessment, the province of Toliara situated in the south-west part of the country is selected and based on the population lifestyles, two types of households namely poor and non-poor are considered, with each type of household having its daily energy demand. The acceptable power system configuration is chosen based on its ability to meet the load demand and its cost effectiveness. For cleaner cooking, the study considers that both types of households use the same amount of energy for their daily energy demand. The cost assessment of cleaner cooking using biogas stoves is carried out using economic data of the digester and cooking stoves.
