Design of Biosensor for the Detection of Pregnancy based on HCG Presence in Urine using Photonic Crystal Waveguide

Photonic sensing is an emerging technology in the field of biosensors which is attractive due to its accuracy and small size. A two-dimensional photonic crystal structure is proposed in this paper for the detection of HCG in urine inorder to determine pregnancy in an individual. Presence of HCG in urine is indicated by changing the refractive index of urine, in turn output of sensor will vary based on presence of pregnancy hormone, hence pregnancy is detected. The size of proposed structure is 6μmX6μm. FDTD method is used for analysis, Lumerical is the simulation tool used for designing the structure. For changes in refractive index of urine, considerable changes in the transmission flux is observed, hence it acts as sensor and can be realized for medical application.
