Maiden Application of Search and Rescue Optimization Algorithm for Automatic Generation Control of Interconnected Power System

This paper proposes a new metaheuristic optimizer called Search and Rescue (SAR) algorithm for solving Automatic generation control (AGC) problem in power system. A two-area interconnected non-reheat thermal power system model including physical constraints namely, governor dead band (GDB) and generation rate constraint (GRC) with widely used Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is taken into consideration for the study. The efficacy of the newly proposed algorithm for AGC is shown by comparing it with two popular metaheuristic techniques such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) for optimizing the parameters of PID controller with Integral of time multiplied absolute error (ITAE) as the objective function. Simulation study supports the claim that the SAR algorithm provides better dynamic responses as compared to the other two algorithms especially in terms of settling time and peak overshoot.
