Optimization of Free Space Optical Terrestrial Link Considering Different System Parameters

Free Space Optical communication system has been studied, improved and being implemented in various regions globally. There are several reasons due to which this communication technology stands out and is still ahead in terms of providing services amongst the traditional and relatively fresher communication technologies, be it the bandwidth requirements being fulfilled, the data rate being provided by this technology or the licensing issues faced by operators and industries as witnessed in the case of Radio communication technology. However, apart from all the advantages, the implementation of this technology suffers from some major challenges and disadvantages due to the dependency on the alignment of transmitter and receivers used in the system. Similarly, its reliance on the physical properties of the medium in which it is being operated can sometimes make its implementation almost impossible. This paper focuses on optimization of various internal system parameters of FSO link such as the major one the wavelength, the best suitable detector, beam divergence, type of modulation and the power etc. in order to obtain maximum possible link range and availability.
