The Optimal PMU Placement in the Power Systems for the Enhancement of State Estimation

Modern power systems face new challenges due to renewable energy penetration. New measures should be adopted to ensure stabile, safe and secure operation of power systems. One of these new measures is application of wide area monitoring system (WAMS)based oninstalling phasor measurement unit (PMU) at selected buses. PMUs can provide the phasor information including (magnitudes and phase angels), this information can be used in real time monitoring and controlling of the power system. This paper presents a comparative study aimed at selecting the optimal PMUplacement (OPP) for fully observable power system network. The OPP methods considered in this paper are: Depth First Search (DFS), Graphic Theoretic Procedure using Merger Method, Graphic Theoretic Procedure using Nonlinear Constraint Function Method, Original Simulated Annealing Method, Modified Simulated Annealing Method and Recursive Security N Algorithm. These methods are tested on IEEE 14, 30, 57,118 bus and New England 39 bus system using MATLAB software to compare the performance of these algorithms. The execution time for all case is also investigated. The effect of PMUs on the state estimation of the power system is also addressed in the paper.
