Network Connectivity Performance Analysis of Platoon-based Vehicular Ad-hoc Network on a Two-Way Lane

Vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) is an Ad-hoc network with fast dynamic characteristics. Achieving reliable end-to-end communications in VANET is changeling due to the fast moving of vehicles. To this end, network connectivity has become an important performance indicator for VANET quality and it is necessary to enhance the network connectivity to transfer information more efficiently and quickly. In this paper, the connectivity probability is mainly analyzed for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure(V2I) communications. In order to make the research more close to the real fact, we study the connectivity characteristic of platoon-based VANET on a two-way lane. Some key parameters are also investigated in order to analyze the impact connectivity performance, including the vehicle speed, the distance between BS, the vehicle arrival rate, the vehicle communication range, the ratio of vehicles transmit signals and the vehicle safety distance, respectively. The simulation shows that the network connectivity probability of platoon-based VANETs on a two-way lane is significantly higher than those on a one-way Lane or without platoons.
