Clutter Cancellation for Radar Detecting Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Based on FPLMS Algorithm

A Frequency-domain Pulse Least-Mean-Square (FPLMS) algorithm is proposed to cancel clutter for radar detecting Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), which are masked by the broadened Doppler main lobe of clutter. Making use of the stationarity of clutter across pulses, this algorithm adaptively estimates the complex amplitudes of clutter in all range cells, reconstructs clutter and then cancels them from echo signal. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to cancel clutter effectively and thus eliminate the mask effect of clutter main lobe on slow targets. In addition, the filter notch of the proposed algorithm is quite narrow, about 1/3 width of the traditional Moving Target Identification (MTI) filter. For targets with velocity greater than one velocity resolution cell, there are almost no Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) losses.
