Beampattern Synthesis with Subarray Layout

This paper focused on a beampattern synthesis problem with the constrained subarray layout constrained optimization. We first propose a thinned array architecture, and establish a beampattern model constrained by subarray layout. In order to achieve the optimal layout of subarrays and the optimal design of weight vector, we establish an optimal model. Its constraints include beamforming constraints and subarray layout constraints. For the latter, we use a new approximation method to constrain the subarray layout effectively. Next, we use the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework to decompose this optimization problem into three optimization sub-problems which are easy to be solved, and solve them iteratively. Finally, several numerical simulations show the results of beampattern synthesis for the proposed array structure under the different beampattern constraints, and assess the validity of the proposed method.
