Impact assessment of gas shortages on the European power system under extreme weather conditions

The importance of gas infrastructures for energy security is increasing as gas-fired power plants are supporting renewable energies in the energy transition. In this paper, an analysis of the European gas system under supply disruptions demonstrates that cooperative strategies achieve a better supply of gas and subsequently a lower impact on generating capacity and a better satisfaction of the electricity demand of the power system. Mathematical optimisation is used to find the best solution to minimise the gas shortage while analysis of available gas-fired power plants and power system remaining capacities is developed taking data from ENTSO-E Winter Outlook on the simultaneous peak day 18^th January 2017 for both European gas and electricity systems.
