Electric vehicle recharge strategies for frequency control in electrical power systems with high wind power generation

Increasing levels of wind power penetration in electrical power systems pose new challenges for their safe operation. One of these challenges is keeping the generation-demand balance in order to maintain the system frequency within acceptable bounds. A possible approach to solving this issue is using demand side response mechanisms, which complement the current generation side power-frequency regulation. This paper addresses the effect responsive electric vehicle (EV) charging strategies could have in mitigating the impact on frequency stability caused by fluctuating wind power generation. To do so, the frequency response to several wind conditions and EVs charging strategies is studied using a model of a hybrid electrical power system located in an island. The results show that the participation of even a small fraction of the total demand in frequency control can have a significant impact.
