Design of a Synchronous Motor with a Novel Fractional Slot Concentrated Winding for the Use as Compressor Drive in Automotive Air Conditioning

Electrifying the compressor in automotive air conditioning promises less fuel consumption and higher comfort. Interior permanent magnet synchronous motors with fractional slot concentrated windings are particularly favourable in this application. This paper suggests a design with 18 slots and 14 poles which replaces the conventional two layer winding by a novel mixed layer winding in order to lower primarily vibrations and noise but also the losses. Both winding types are applied to a low voltage compressor motor. A finite elements approach allows the comparison of the two winding layouts.
