Design of New Y Splitter based on Photonic Crystal for Optical Communication

In this article, the development of a new structure of an optical Y-splitter based on photonic crystals (PhC) waveguide have been carried out. The performances of this new Y-splitter has been determined by using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) and plane wave expansion (PWE) methods. We have chosen a hexagonal lattice 21×21 as a basic structure to design our Y-splitter. As the results, the power spectra on TM mode is exactly superposed of the two output ports of the Y-splitter device. The Simulation results confirm also that; the proposed splitter provides a relatively higher transmission efficiency. The splitting ratio for 50-50 was about at 44 %, and the total radiation loss has minimized to 12 % (about 0.555 dB for each output port). So, the proposed Y-splitter is considered as an excellent device for the development of optical communication systems.
