Comparative Study of Static VAR Compensation Techniques — Thyristor Switched Reactor and Thyristor Switched Capacitor

The paper makes a comparative study of the two Static VAR Compensation (SVC) techniques - Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC) and Thyristor Switched Reactor (TSR). These techniques are defined, examined and compared. The major constituent of the power flow should be active power and a sufficient and minimal amount of reactive power should be allowed to flow in the transmission line. For power system stability and reliability, there arises a need to compensate the reactive power flow. This Reactive Power Compensation has been done on a medium transmission line, which was modelled by scaling down to practically achievable parameters in a laboratory setup, for different load values. Thus, the paper also enables appropriate and relevant selection of the FACTS Controller based on the type and rating of load and also provides scope for implementation in the laboratory.
