A Case Study of WSN MAC Protocols to Achieve Lifetime Maximization

Wireless Sensor Network provides solution to many problems like disaster management, safety and security, healthcare etc. While designing such network, energy constraint along with QoS need to be considered as per the requirement of a network. Scheduling node activity at MAC layer is powerful techniques to achieve the energy efficiency with QoS (in certain cases). In this paper, we analyzed MAC performance of contention based 802.11 and schedule based 802.15.4 MAC protocols with their issues and limitations. Finally, based on our observations, we like to present the idea of hybrid energy efficient scheduling algorithm which may adopt traffic variations. It may achieve energy efficiency with QoS.
