Abstract:

Hybrid power stations (HPSs) constitute virtual power plants comprising storage and RES facilities operated by a single entity, the HPS operator. The HPS concept applies in saturated insular power systems as a means to increase renewable penetration. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the operation of a small non-interconnected island (NII) power system incorporating a relatively large hybrid wind-PV-battery power station. The anticipated benefits for the system due to the HPS will be quantified in terms of system economics and renewables penetration, while indices related to the annual operation of the local power station comprising thermal units will be assessed as well. The exploitation of the available renewable energy of the HPS will be examined and the internal operation of HPS components will be evaluated. A MILP-based optimization generation scheduling approach will be used to perform daily and annual simulations.
