Optically controlled millimeter wave phased arrays: Status and future challenges

Various optical techniques are under consideration to provide signal distribution for GaAs MMIC radiating elements in large phased array antennas, to reduce weight, complexity and electrical interference. In this presentation, system architectures concepts for optically controlled phased arrays are outlined. The key optical and microwave components required for the feasibility of these architectures for millimeter wave range are described.
