Picojoule-per-bit coherent links through co-design of photonic and electronic ICs

The scaling of CMOS and BiCMOS processes with silicon photonic devices will realize energy-efficient coherent transmitters and receivers for short reach (< 2km) applications. We review the principles of coherent links and discuss co-design of electronic and photonic circuitry to optimize QPSK modulation and demodulation.
