Fifth Generation (5G) Cellular Technology

Cellular wireless communication is normally categorized in generations that are normally denoted by G. The development of the fifth generation (5G) of wireless systems is underway and is expected to be released beyond 2020. This chapter aims to analyze the development of the 5G of wireless communication systems and the network of tomorrow. It analyzes market standardizations that have been proposed for 5G cellular technology. The primary idea in developing 5G cellular architecture is the separation of indoor and outdoor cases so as to minimize penetration loss. Use of the two scenarios will be assisted by the use of massive multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) and distributed antenna system technology. MIMO technology depends on multiple antennas to simultaneously transmit multiple streams of data in a wireless communication system. There are several challenges associated with Machine to Machine communication that involves the operation, power consumption, and complex requirements.
