Harmonic Mitigation Using Shunt Active Power Filter Under Various Loading Condition

Exponentially increasing population of modern electronic gadgets, smart equipment, automation and controls has made low tension distribution systems inflicted with current harmonics leading to poor efficiency, higher regulations, poor power factor, bus voltage distortions and increased neutral common mode current. Generation of reference signals (RS) for shunt active power filter (SAPF) using the p-q reactive power control strategy has been used. This paper presents the p-q theory control strategy with PI controller and hysteresis controller for extraction of the current reference signal for SAPF. The performance of SAPF for RL load under balanced and unbalanced loading condition has been verified on the Matlab/Simulink platform. The proposed strategy is able to achieve better optimum total harmonic distortion (THD) and has been validated using numerical results, which also justifies the extensibility of the strategy.
