Multilevel Converter with Binary Turns Ratio for Solar PV Grid Tied Applications

This paper presents a three-phase seven-level transformer based multilevel converter (MLC) with a single PV source. A solar photovoltaic (SPV) array acts as source of active power and is operated at maximum power point (MPP). The secondary winding of transformer possess binary turn ratio and cascaded to obtain seven levels in output voltage. The active and reactive power are controlled using a decoupled controller. This proposed system has advantages over conventional topologies in terms of reduced DC voltage sensors, galvanic isolation and cost effectiveness. The system performance is simulated on MATLAB/Simulink for constant and variable PV irradiations. Moreover, test results are obtained using OPAL-RT, which validate simulated results that meets the IEEE standard.
