Design and Analysis of Toothed Log Periodic Antenna as Partial Discharge Sensor in Power Apparatus

Insulation system is one of the most critical parts in electrical equipment, where it often becomes the factor to electrical failures. Therefore, in order to learn the condition of an electrical equipment, it can be simply monitored by its insulation system condition. Partial discharge (PD) detection is one of the monitoring methods in an insulation system. PD can occur in an insulation material when it is exposed to a high electric field. This paper discusses the design and analysis of toothed log periodic antenna as the sensor for PD detection in power apparatus. This particular antenna is designed and simulated using antenna design software, fabricated on a PCB with FR4 epoxy substrate and with 1.6 mm thickness, and tested using Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) to get the antenna characteristic, as well as tested for PD detection in HV Laboratory that takes PD source from a needle electrode. There are two toothed log periodic antennas that are designed in this research. One of the toothed log periodic antennas has 13.17 dB return loss at 650 MHz, 50 MHz bandwidth, and VSWR of 3.29, and another one has -14.67 dB return loss at 1.24 GHz, 60 MHz bandwidth, and VSWR of 1.90.
