The Effects of the Workplace Design, Work Methods Design and Health Problems and Occupational Diseases in the Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders among Bank Tellers

The Philippines' finance and insurance industry recorded 2777 cases of occupational diseases in establishments employing 20 or more workers for the year 2015. This paper aims to conduct ergonomic assessment in the bank tellers' workstations of Philippine banks to minimize the risk of injury, boost employee health and wellbeing, and enhance transaction rate and performance. The respondents were comprised of 93 bank tellers from Quezon City, 40 from Makati City and 38 from Manila City. The researchers determined and identified bank tellers' activities such as handling of deposit, withdrawal and balancing of transactions that have shown symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders. The results of the study showed BMI, smoking habits, hours spent in using computer, and final RH score have significant relationship to the CMDQ scores that would indicate high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders to bank tellers. In order to minimize musculoskeletal disorders, this paper proposed an ergonomically designed workplace. As further study, other factors that affect the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among bank tellers have to be looked into particularly the possible impact of extraneous variables to their daily activities.
