Effect of Higher Order Resonant Converter Topology nn DC charging Application and Hardware Implementation

Pulse power systems are used to deliver short but intense burst of energy to the extremely dynamic loads like magnetrons at a single sure shot mode or in repetitive mode with negligible amount of time. A suitable charging power supply supported by a charging capacitor is mandatory to charge pulse power systems at fast rates. A compatible and compact 4

order resonance based power supply with aided charging capacitor has been developed for applications involving pulse power. The developed prototype rated with 1kV and 500J/s used to charge energy storage capacitor of solid state switch based power modulator. This paper proposes a new resonant topology for pulse power, which provides load autonomous steady current, soft switching at switching frequency identical to resonant frequency. Apart from said advantages, this topology also minimizes the peak current flowing through IGBT switches in the inverter stage. Mathematical analysis carried out for the same found the conditions. By adopting this resonant topology in the power supply the peak current reduces to almost half over series LC resonant based charging source. The power supply size reduced due to reduction in number of IGBT switches and thermal management in the inverter stage. The prototype tested with 100μF capacitor, simultaneously found the transient and steady state errors in both series LC and 4

order CLCL resonant topology. Soft switching technique like zero current switching and zero voltage switching achieved experimentally with both topologies.
