Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Properties of 2D MXene (Ti3C2Tx) by Metal nanoparticles Loading

In this present study, we reported the fabrication of silver nanoparticles combined with 2D MXene hybrid nanostructures (Ag-Ti3C2Tx) and its attenuation properties of electromagnetic radiation were evaluated. Initially, MXene (Ti3C2Tx) were exfoliated from hydrofluoric acid from MAX (Ti3AlC2) phase followed simple chemical self-reduction based approach applied to prepare Ag-Ti3C2Tx hybrid nanostructure. Structural and morphological characteristics such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that the successful decoration of silver nanoparticles without altering the inherent structure of Ti3C2Tx layers. More importantly, the EMI shielding properties of pure and Ag-Ti3C2Tx hybrid structures were measured using paraffin as a matrix. Interestingly, the enhanced EMI shielding performance was obtained for AgTi3C2Tx hybrid over pure Ti3C2Tx attributed to the attachment of highly conducting silver nanoparticles. Specifically, the EMI shielding performance of Ag-Ti3C2Tx enhanced to 44.12 ± 1.99 dB compared with pure Ti3C2Tx (32.69 ± 0.75 dB) at similar filler loading concentration (50 wt%) in paraffin matrix. Moreover, EMI attenuation property of Ag-Ti3C2Tx hybrid nanostructures can be tuned by increasing filler loading concentration in paraffin matrix. The explored absorption dominated EMI shielding performance of Ag-Ti3C2Tx could be interesting in the construction of novel EMI shielding materials.
