Static and Dynamic Performance Research of Superconducting Fault Current Limiting Cable Used in DC Distribution Network

High temperature superconducting fault current limiting (HTS-FCL) cable utilizes zero resistance characteristics of YBCO superconductor to transmit electricity, and takes advantage of high resistance peculiarity of YBCO superconductor when superconductor at flux-flow or normal states to limit fault current. DC distribution network has the superiorities of high transmission capacity, long power supply distance and flexibility, etc. But it faces so much difficulty in breaking fast when it fails. DC HTS-FCL cables are expected to be used in flexible DC distribution network in the future because of its special characteristics. This paper provides a method of DC HTS-FCL cable integrating to DC distribution network, and establishes circuit and simulation models of HTS-FCL cable. Then the static and dynamic performance of conventional and HTS-FCL cable in flexible DC distribution network are compared by simulation through MATLAB, especially the fault current limiting performance of HTS-FCL cable is studied. Finally, one YBCO tape which could be used in HTS-FCL cable is studied and a 500A@77K model HTS-FCL cable is fabricated, tested and analyzed.
