Real-Time Simulation and Control of PM Synchronous Generator for Wind Turbine Applications

Irrespective of the wind variations, when turbine’s TSR (tip-speed ratio) is retained at its optimal value, the maximum power from the available wind can be extracted. This paper highlights the field-oriented control of direct-drive, permanent magnet (PM)-synchronous generator for wind turbine applications so as to enable it for extracting the maximum power from the available wind exploiting TSR algorithm. The PMSG based wind turbine and its control system has been modeled in schematic editor of Typhoon HIL control center software for real-time performance investigations. The real-time simulation of the complete system along with its control has been carried out making use of Typhoon HIL402 simulator.
