Monitoring of Methane Biogas Extraction System from Cow Manure with Iron Oxide as Catalyst

With the increasing demand for energy in the past couple of years, this study developed a methane biogas extraction system capable of measuring the concentration of methane gas using gas sensors and a microcontroller to interpret the data and display the result. The researchers used different combinations: from 1 kg to 5 kg of cow manure and 100 mL to 400 mL of iron oxide catalyst. The yielded gas from every 5 kg of cow manure with different amounts of catalyst were tested to produce fire. The results showed that the combination with the longest duration of fire of 32.31 seconds was produced from a concentration of approximately 3610 ppm of methane gas from the 5 kg manure and 400 mL catalyst. The findings indicated that the manure and catalyst mixture had not yet reached a saturation point suggesting that more methane gas could be produced if stored for more days.
