Bilateral Load Following with a STATCOM and Battery Energy Storage

This paper presents the load allocation in a bilateral agreement between two areas of the power system incorporating a STATCOM with a Battery Energy Storage (BES). The STATCOM with BES operates in parallel with the generating units in both the control areas. The bilateral contract has been defined using a DISCO participation matrix. The appropriate control action is taken by an integral controller to minimize the frequency error. The optimum integral gain values are obtained by minimizing Integral Square Error (ISE) and gains are tuned by Genetic Algorithm. The system with and without STATCOM and BES is simulated by using MATLAB/ SIMULINK and the results obtained are presented in this paper. The results show that addition of STATCOM and BES leads to lesser overshoot and faster settling time in frequency and tie line errors.
