Challenges in the incorporation of rehabilitation technology to public health in Costa Rica

This paper presents a case illustrating the barriers for technology translation of rehabilitation systems (in this case a robotic gym) in the public health sector of Costa Rica. These challenges include (i) difficulties in allotting research time in a highly clinical-oriented healthcare culture, (ii) bureaucratic obstacles to greater integration of engineers and clinical researchers, and (iii) gaps in pertinent research and intellectual property protocols. The healthcare system also affords us opportunities such as integrated patient data to optimize healthcare delivery. We believe these challenges and opportunities are present in other healthcare systems, particularly those in low and middle-level income countries.
