Three Modified Structures of Photonic Crystal Fiber for Estimation of Sulfuric Acid Concentration with Low Confinement Loss and Negative Dispersion

At present different electronic devices are used in chemical industries in sensing purpose but they have major limitations in the industrial environment due to their vulnerability to temperature and pressure. The reported work depicted the use of index guided photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for the very first time to measure the concentration of sulfuric acid (H
₂
SO
₄
) - one of the most used industrial chemical substances. Three fundamental PCF structures - octagonal, decagonal and circular are employed to serve the purpose whose parameters are optimized to obtain better performance while minimizing the limitations. Also, the two most significant optical parameters - confinement loss and dispersion are also analyzed and low loss and negative dispersion are obtained within the range of telecommunication wavelength 1.5μm to 1.8μm with satisfactory dispersion co-efficient of -287.8 ps/km.nm at 1.55 μm. So the designed structures can also be used in telecommunication, cable TV or other high-speed optical networks. Moreover, comparatively economical, less noise interference, higher sensitivity, fast response, authenticity, and compactness has made these PCFs more suitable than an electronic device in sensing application.
