Fault detection in MTDC network utilising one end measurements

The voltage source converter (VSC) based Multi-Terminal Direct Current (MTDC) system is used to transfer the bulk amount of power over large distances by connecting two or more AC/DC converter stations. However, the exposure of the MTDC transmission network to various atmospheric conditions paralleled with the vulnerability of semiconductor devices in VSCs leads to a high chance of failure and fault. This fault, if persists for a long time will result into total shutdown of the network. To avoid this condition, it is important to detect the fault in the MTDC network in the least possible time. Thus, the present paper introduces a novel approach using the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) for detecting the fault in VSC based MTDC transmission lines. The fault is created at different locations of the transmission line to study the performance of the presented method. The presented strategy provides the benefit of 98.6% reach setting of relay and rapid fault detection. The performance and effectiveness of implemented FIS based approach for fault detection is studied and verified in MATLAB/Simulink.
