Design, Fabrication and Performance Analysis of a Voice Coil Motor Using Different Input Signal

Voice coil motors (VCM) are direct drive, limited motion devices that use permanent magnet and coil winding (conductor) to produce a force proportional to the applied current. Voice coil motors are mostly used as linear actuators. This paper presents the design and fabrication of a distinctive voice coil motor to be used in tactile sensing devices. The electromechanical conversion mechanism of a voice coil motor is governed by the Lorentz Force Principle. The fabricated VCM consists of two parts integrated together whose one part is in magnetic housing and the other is in coil windings that are free to move axially in magnetic housing. This paper also investigates the performance of fabricated VCM by analyzing the behavior in response to load and linear displacement against current to the VCM. VCM output characteristics are studied and analyzed against different types of input signal such as step, sinusoidal, square, and triangular input.
