Power System Stabilizer Tuning of SMIB using Scilab Software

Application of Power System Stabilizer (PSS) tuning using Scilab software for SMIB system is described in this paper. PSS are added to SMIB system to enhance the damping torque without affecting synchronous torque during low frequency oscillations which are caused due to small signal disturbances. Main objective of using Scilab is that it is free and open source software FOSS) unlike other commercial softwares. Now a day's FOSS plays a very crucial role in research and educational field. So instead of using commercial softwares which are having costly license and `closed', we should use FOSS which can be downloaded free and also having access to source code. Scilab is one of the two major open-source alternatives to Matlab, the other is Octave. Scilab also includes a free package called Xcos for modelling and simulation. Xcos is the open source equivalent to Simulink from the Mathworks.
