A Multilevel Inverter Topology for Driving a Single Phase Induction Motor

Multilevel inverters have become more popular over time in industrial drive applications, with an assurance of fewer disturbances and the possibility to operate at lower switching frequencies than commonplace two-level inverters. In this paper, a modified H bridge multilevel inverter configuration which is capable of giving a seven-level voltage output with reduced Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) has been presented. The inverter configuration was developed and verified by simulating it using the PSim software package. The simulation results obtained were compared with the two-level inverter to highlight the advantages of using the multilevel inverter. The seven-level inverter was implemented in hardware and its output was used to drive a single-phase induction motor.
