Intelligent Hub Access System

A means for high capacity communication between commanders and soldiers in the field is required. The system should be low cost, rapidly deployable, compact, and provide the ability to transmit and receive high resolution video, video-teleconference (VTC), digital maps and command and control information. A system called the Intelligent Hub Access System (IHAS) is described to suit this requirement. The IHAS uses low cost Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (UNIT band) radio transceivers for communications. At the hub, multiple low cost transceivers are ported to an Ethernet switch to provide full duplex, 10 Mb/s dedicated throughput to each remote station. On the wireless side, the radio transceivers are ported to a low cost, multibeam directive antenna. A combination of frequency channelization diversity from the transceivers and angular diversity from the multibeam antenna provides for dedicated 10 Mb/s full duplex throughput to up to 24 remote stations. The transceivers frequency plan and multibeam antenna are described. The IHAS system is currently undergoing system testing and evaluation. Throughput is dependent on the ability of the Hub controller to manage received signal strength and transmit power on each of the potentially interfering (or jammed) radio paths.
