New generic model of wind turbine voltage ride-through for large-scale power system studies

With the rapid growth of wind power, the dynamic behaviour of the wind turbine generator (WTG) has a greater impact on the stability constraints of the power grid. Voltage ride through control is the most significant factor. However, the wind power control system involves lots of power electronic equipment, and there are so many WTG manufacturers, even worse, the structure and characteristics are significantly different between each other. Detailed modelling of every single WTG of large-scale power system is impossible. So, it is important to develop a simplified generic simulation model for large-scale power system studies. The IEC and the Western Electric Coordinating Council have done excellent jobs on WTG generic models. The generic models they proposed being widely used by the wind industry, but the voltage ride-through part is relatively not generic enough for large-scale power system studies. In this paper, a new generic WTG voltage ride-through model is proposed, which is based on operation states transition and unified characterization method of control strategy during the voltage ride-through process. Model validations are made by comparison of simulation results and measurements in voltage drop events.
