A Review of the Impact of Integrating Wind Generation on Transient Stability

Wind power generation is a popular technology for renewable energy generation. The literature on the impact of integrating wind generators on the power system transient stability is reviewed to determine if they improve or reduce stability. In addition, power system modelling considerations when investigating transient stability are discussed. The reviewed literature suggested that aggregated wind farm models are used to perform transient stability analysis. Fixed speed wind generators were found to reduce transient stability, while variable speed wind generators improved transient stability. However, the literature review also revealed that the system operator in South Africa requires wind farms to have voltage ride-through capability so they can support the voltage when there are power system faults, irrespective of the wind generator technology used. To meet this requirement, wind farms that utilize fixed speed wind generators use dynamic shunt compensation devices so they can support voltages when there are power system faults. As a result, in South African, irrespective of the wind generator technology utilized by wind farms, the transient stability of the power system is expected to improve because all wind farms can support voltages when there are faults in the power system. The literature review also identified that when investigating transient stability, the stochasticity of the power generated by wind generators due to the variability of wind speeds should be taken into consideration. This is done using probabilistic transient stability analysis to investigate power systems integrating wind generators.
