Making Non-fired Brick Using Locally Produced Induction Furnace Steel Slag

In the present study, the non-fired bricks were made using induction furnace steel slag generated in the local steel mills of Bangladesh. Induction furnace steel slag, cement, hydrated lime mixtures with gypsum as a binder were used to make bricks. The slag composition was varied by 0%, 25% and 50%. The bricks were cured under water for 7, 14 and 28 days. The compressive strength, water absorption, density and porosity of the bricks were compared with conventional burnt clay brick. The compressive strength of the non-fired slag bricks showed superior numerical values compared to the conventional burnt clay brick. The highest compressive strength attained was 157.45 MPa (1605.5 kg/cm
²
) which is 15 times higher than first class conventional burnt clay brick (105kg/cm2). The obtained results show very promising way to transform the waste products into useful resources.
