An Optimal LQG-DC Control for Compensating Voltage Fluctuation in a Single Area Power System

In this technical brief an optimal linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control scheme is proposed for the robust control of an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) in a single area power system. In order to improve the overshoot damping efficiency of the system a damping compensator (DC) is incorporated with the LQG controller. The aim of this LQG-DC controller is to restore the nominal voltage of a grid isolated power system due to sudden load variation. The response of AVR system after implementing conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID), linear-quadratic-regulator (LQR) and LQG controller is compared with the proposed LQG-DC control scheme to prove its efficacy.
