Endothelial Cell Dysfunction Assessment by Arm Positioning Reactive Hyperemia Induced

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has been listed as the number one cost of death. Over 17 million people died from CVDs every year, 31% of all global deaths. Early detection and treatment can help to reduce the number of deaths. Endothelial disfunction assessment by FMD method are commonly used for early detection for Cardiovascular diseases. This method is noninvasive assessment that relate with gold standard assessment. FMD process used pneumatic cuff to create occlusion and mediate the blood flow. This process produce pain and discomfort. Some people even doubt the safety of this procedure when his hand turn blue because of lack of oxygen. This work proposed a modification to FMD standard operational procedure for better safety and comfort to the subject. We altered the occlusion method by pneumatic cuff with arm positioning for more natural occlusion. The effect of FMD was measured by peripheral arterial volume (PAV) method. The result from 14 young age subjects showed that PAV index of arm positioning method was in strong correlation (r=0.9) with the standard cuff occlusion. Hopefully, this alternate procedure can help improvement of FMD process and CVDs early detection in near future.
