Modeling the Viability of a Refrigeration-Based Atmospheric Water Generator under the Present-Day Climate

In this study, a mathematical model was developed of an atmospheric water generator which utilizes a vapor compression refrigeration cycle to improve performance. This model was used as a tool to assess the feasibility and productivity of a water generator under a given climate with and without the use of heat pump. In addition, for two general system configurations with heat pumps, important parameters pertaining to the performance of each system were determined, such as the water production efficiency (defined as the volume of water generated per energy input). Based on these results, self-contained energy systems can then be designed to allow these systems to be operated in remote areas without access to an electrical grid.
