Information and Communication Technologies Potential for Future Power Systems Control

This paper presents a review and attempt for estimation of the potential of application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for serving the management of future power systems including control, protection, automation, stability and security. A survey of various communication approaches and needed input data used in ICT for power system control is made. Some communication protocols and standards as well as future trends are also briefly discussed. The power balancing, power quality, system stability and control should be secured through geographically spread cyber- physical networks, which appears to be a very challenging task not only for the power system but also for the serving ICT infrastructure.
