Maiden Application of Coyote Optimizer Algorithm with TIDN Controller in AGC of a Multi-Area Multi-Source System

This paper deals with automatic generation control of an unequal three-area thermal system with integration of solar thermal power plant (STPP) in area-1, geothermal power plant (GTPP) in area-2 and two thermal units in area-3. A maiden attempt has been made to apply a Tilt-integral-derivative-filter (TIDN) as secondary controller. A new nature inspired metaheuristic algorithm called Coyote optimization algorithm (COA) is successfully applied for AGC studies. Investigations of system dynamics considering proportional-integral-derivativefilter (PIDN), IDDN and TIDN controller reveals the better responses with TIDN controller in terms of settling time and oscillations magnitude. Moreover, the superiority of COA technique is tested with firefly and cuckoo search algorithms in terms of convergence characteristics. Furthermore, the system dynamic response comparison with parallel AC/HVDC tie-lines and renewable energy sources (RES) like GTPP and STPP explores the better responses over the systems with and without RES and parallel AC/HVDC tie-lines.
