Detecting Limit Cycles in Dimension Two

Using algebraic methods, we construct an observer to detect a stable limit cycle for a smooth second order nonlinear system when a trajectory of the system is observed. This observer exploits an inherent simple time-invariant structure of the problem. Some algebraic insight is also given, based on elimination theory, to detect a class of dynamical systems which are consistent with a known limit cycle.
